Custom Hat Manufacturing Glossary

Definitions of 66 industry terms covering cap construction, decoration techniques, fabrics, compliance certifications, logistics and sizing. Free to use; link with attribution.

Construction & Anatomy

6-panel cap#

A baseball cap built from six fabric triangles that meet at a center seam at the top of the crown. The industry-default construction for retail, sports and promotional caps. Distinguished from 5-panel caps by the visible vertical front seam.

5-panel cap#

A cap built from a single seamless front panel plus two side and two back panels. Popular for skate, outdoor and festival positioning because the uninterrupted front panel suits wider patches, larger embroidery and all-over sublimation print.

Buckram#

A stiff woven fabric impregnated with adhesive that is fused to the inside of cap front panels to maintain a structured crown shape. Polyester buckram (0.4-0.7 mm thickness) is the modern standard; thicker buckram produces a more retail-grade structured feel.

Crown#

The dome of fabric that covers the top of the head on a cap. Crown profile can be low (dad-hat aesthetic), mid (baseball cap default), or high (snapback streetwear). Crown depth is measured front-to-back and influences how the cap sits on the head.

Brim#

The forward-projecting visor on a cap. Brim shape can be pre-curved (1-2 cm curve, standard baseball cap), flat (snapback), or bucket-style (5-7 cm horizontal disc). Brim stiffness comes from internal plastic or buckram inserts.

Sweatband#

The strip of fabric sewn inside the cap circumference where the brim meets the crown. Functions to absorb perspiration. Standard cotton or polyester; premium athletic caps use polyester-elastane moisture-wicking sweatband.

Eyelet#

Small ventilation holes punched through the crown panels (typically 6 holes on a 6-panel cap, one per panel). Standard eyelets are stitched (color-matched thread); premium versions use brass or color-matched grommets.

Snap closure (snapback)#

Plastic snap mechanism with 8 positions on the back of the cap, allowing adjustable fit across the 54-62 cm range. Industry standard for snapback hats, trucker caps and promotional baseball caps. 8 stocked colors; custom Pantone snaps available at 500+ piece MOQ.

Strapback (fabric strap with buckle)#

Adjustable closure using a 1.5-2 cm wide fabric strap and metal slide buckle. Standard for dad hats and unstructured premium streetwear caps. Buckle stocked in antique brass, matte black and brushed nickel.

Fitted cap#

A cap stitched to a specific crown circumference (sizes 6 7/8 through 8). No adjustable closure — fits one head size only. Standard for professional sports licensed merchandise; requires per-size MOQ runs.

Fabrics & Materials

Cotton twill#

A woven cotton fabric with diagonal weave pattern. The most common cap fabric. Weights 6.4 oz (240 gsm) standard and 7.5 oz (280 gsm) premium. Takes embroidery cleanly, ages well, comfortable. Used in baseball caps, dad hats, snapbacks.

Brushed cotton#

Cotton twill with surface fibers raised by mechanical brushing, creating a soft hand-feel. Premium positioning. Slightly more expensive ($0.20-$0.40 per cap upcharge). Heritage, fashion-forward retail brands favor brushed cotton over standard twill.

Wool melton#

Densely woven wool fabric with felted finish. The heritage/premium retail standard for fitted caps, snapbacks and cold-weather caps. 100% wool melton premium positioning; 80/20 acrylic-wool blend is the streetwear default at lower cost.

Acrylic-wool blend (80/20)#

Standard streetwear and sports cap fabric — 80% acrylic, 20% wool. Cheaper than pure wool, more washable, less pilling. The MLB-style cap standard for decades. Adds $0.80-$1.20 per cap vs. cotton twill.

rPET (recycled polyester)#

Polyester yarn produced from recycled plastic bottles (typically PET bottles, mechanically recycled). GRS-certified rPET is the standard sustainability claim. Performance and visual quality essentially identical to virgin polyester. Adds $0.40-$0.70 per cap.

GSM (grams per square meter)#

Standard fabric weight measurement. Cotton twill cap fabric runs 240-280 gsm; lightweight performance polyester 180-220 gsm; wool melton 350-450 gsm. Higher GSM = thicker, heavier, more structured feel. Lower GSM = lighter, more breathable, more flexible.

Denier#

Yarn thickness measurement for synthetic fibers. Lower denier = finer yarn (e.g., 70D microfiber polyester) = smoother fabric. Higher denier (e.g., 600D nylon ripstop) = thicker, tougher. Standard trucker mesh is 75D polyester; premium microfiber mesh 50D.

Gauge (knit gauge)#

Stitches per inch on a knitting machine. 7gg knit beanies are thick and textured; 12gg knit beanies are finer and smoother. Higher gauge = finer, more premium retail feel. Merino wool beanies typically knit 12gg; acrylic budget beanies typically 7gg.

Organic cotton (GOTS)#

Cotton grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, certified by GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) through the supply chain. Adds 15-20% per cap. Premium retail positioning for eco-focused brands.

Corduroy#

A woven cotton fabric with raised parallel ribs (wales). 4-wale (wide ribs) and 8-wale (fine ribs) are standard cap variants. Strong autumn/winter retail positioning. Used on bucket hats, dad hats, premium streetwear capsules.

Compliance & Certifications

BSCI 2.0#

Business Social Compliance Initiative by amfori — a social audit standard. Covers 13 areas including working hours, wage records, contract documentation, fire safety, child-labor age verification. European retailer favorite (H&M, Aldi, Lidl). 12-month validity. Audit takes 1-2 days.

Sedex SMETA#

Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit. The '4-Pillar' version covers Labor, Health & Safety, Environment and Business Ethics. UK and increasingly global retailer favorite. 12-month validity. Audit takes 2-3 days. Conducted by SGS, BV, Intertek, QIMA, TÜV and other approved firms.

WRAP#

Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production — apparel-specific social compliance audit favored by US retailers for licensed merchandise (collegiate, MLB-style, music tour). Three levels: Platinum (multi-year), Gold (2-year), Silver (12-month). Audit 1-2 days.

WCA (Walmart Conformance Audit)#

Walmart Standards for Suppliers audit. Required for any factory shipping to Walmart, Sam's Club, or Walmart-adjacent programs. Walmart-specific methodology, mirrors SMETA in scope. 12-month validity.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100#

Independent textile testing standard certifying that the product is free from harmful substances under regulated limits. Common at all sustainability-aware retail buyers. Tests for residual chemicals, heavy metals, formaldehyde and azo dyes. Required by EU REACH-compliant programs.

GRS (Global Recycled Standard)#

Certification verifying recycled content claims in textiles. Covers chain of custody from recycled source through finished product. Required for credible 'made from recycled' claims at retail. Most common application: rPET (recycled polyester) caps.

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)#

Organic textile certification through the supply chain. Required for credible 'organic cotton' or 'organic wool' retail claims. Adds 15-20% per cap. Scope certificate identifies certified facility; transaction certificate confirms specific shipment.

REACH#

Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals — EU regulation governing substances in consumer products. Includes Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) list. UK REACH applies post-Brexit. Compliance evidenced by OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification.

CPSIA#

Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act — US regulation governing children's products. Required for any cap intended for children 12 and under. Mandates third-party testing for lead (90 ppm coatings, 100 ppm substrate), phthalates and small-parts compliance. Children's Product Certificate (CPC) required.

AQL 2.5#

Acceptable Quality Limit — the international apparel inspection sampling standard. AQL 2.5 allows a small percentage of defects: 0 critical, 1-7 major (depending on sample size), 3-14 minor. Industry standard for retail-grade hat shipments. Required by most major US/EU/UK retail buyers.

AGEC#

French Loi Anti-gaspillage pour une Économie Circulaire (Anti-waste Circular Economy Law). Imposes textile traceability and environmental labelling on products sold in France. Requires disclosure of fiber composition, manufacturing country, recycled content and a digital traceability link.

GPSR#

EU General Product Safety Regulation (replaced GPSD in December 2024). Importers must maintain product safety files for all consumer products sold in the EU: manufacturer identification, risk assessment, test reports, traceability code. File retained for 10 years.

Logistics & Trade

FOB (Free On Board)#

An Incoterm where the supplier delivers the goods to the ship at a named port; the buyer arranges ocean freight, insurance and customs clearance. The most common arrangement for hat imports above 200 pieces. Risk passes from seller to buyer at ship's rail.

CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight)#

An Incoterm where the supplier arranges ocean freight and insurance to the destination port; the buyer takes ownership after ocean arrival and pays customs clearance and duties. Adds 5-10% to FOB cost.

DDP (Delivered Duty Paid)#

An Incoterm where the supplier handles everything door-to-door — ocean freight, customs clearance, import duties, VAT/GST, and final-mile delivery to the buyer's warehouse. Single invoice. Adds 25-45% to FOB cost. Popular with first-time importers.

Bill of Lading (B/L)#

The shipping document that proves cargo has been loaded onto a vessel. Functions as a title document — the consignee uses the B/L to take possession of cargo at destination. Original B/L typically released by supplier upon buyer's balance payment.

Section 301 tariff#

US trade-action tariff on Chinese imports, including most chapter 6505 headwear, adding 7.5% or 25% to dutiable value depending on classification. Significant impact on US importer landed cost. Mitigation includes HTS reclassification, alternative origin (Vietnam), or DDP shipping to simplify customs.

Form A#

Certificate of Origin originally tied to the Generalized System of Preferences for preferential tariff treatment. China GSP status was suspended in 2018 for the US. Still useful for proving country of origin in regulatory audits. Some EU markets still recognize Form A for preferential rates.

MPF (Merchandise Processing Fee)#

US Customs and Border Protection fee charged on formal entries. 0.3464% of cargo value, minimum $32.71 and maximum $634.62 per entry (2025 rates). Charged in addition to duty. Frequently surprises first-time importers; should be in landed cost calculations.

HMF (Harbor Maintenance Fee)#

US Customs fee of 0.125% of cargo value charged on imports unloaded at US ports. Goes to harbor maintenance trust fund. Charged in addition to duty and MPF. Should be in landed cost calculations alongside MPF.

Sourcing & Process

MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)#

The minimum quantity a factory will accept per design/color combination. Cap MOQ is typically 100 pieces. Lower MOQ may be available at higher per-piece cost. Beanie MOQ is typically 200 pieces due to yarn dyeing economics.

PPS (Pre-Production Sample)#

The final sample produced after artwork approval, using the actual bulk fabric, actual decoration setup and actual production line. Buyer must approve PPS before bulk production begins. The single most important quality control step.

Sample fee#

The per-sample charge a factory bills to produce a custom sample (typically $40-$80). Usually refundable against orders above 500 pieces. Covers labor, fabric, embroidery digitizing setup and shipping. Free samples on first contact are a red flag.

Tech-pack#

The factory-facing specification document for a custom cap project. Covers silhouette, construction, fabric, color, decoration, packaging, sizing, QC requirements and shipping. A complete tech-pack cuts sampling time from 14 days to 7 and reduces revision rounds from 4 to 1.

OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer)#

Manufacturing arrangement where the factory produces products to the buyer's design specifications, branded under the buyer's name. The buyer owns the design IP; the factory provides manufacturing capacity. Most custom hat programs are OEM.

ODM (Original Design Manufacturer)#

Manufacturing arrangement where the factory provides design assistance or original design ideas to the buyer. The factory's design team contributes to the development process. Useful for first-time brand owners or buyers without in-house design capability.

Private label#

Manufacturing arrangement where the buyer purchases existing factory designs and brands them under the buyer's name. Faster than OEM (no custom design or sampling needed) but offers less differentiation. Common for boutiques, gift shops and small retailers.

Trade Assurance#

Alibaba's buyer-protection escrow service. Funds held until buyer confirms shipment quality. Recommended for first-time buyers with new suppliers. Free for buyers; supplier pays small fee. Available on most Alibaba-listed Chinese cap factories.

Sizing & Fit

Crown circumference#

The internal head measurement of a cap, taken at the bottom edge where it sits against the head. Measured in centimeters (54-64 cm range covers most adult sizes) or US fitted sizes (6 7/8 through 8). The single most important sizing measurement for hat fit.

Adjustable size range#

The head circumference range a closure system can fit. Plastic snap (8-position): 54-62 cm. Fabric strap with buckle: 54-63 cm. Velcro: 53-63 cm. Each closure type has slightly different optimal range; outside the range, fit becomes uncomfortable.

One-size adjustable#

A cap with adjustable closure designed to fit most adult heads (typically 54-62 cm). Simplifies inventory — one SKU per design covers the size range. The default sizing model for most custom cap programs, with exceptions for fitted-only retail positioning.

S/M/L tiered sizing#

Sizing model with multiple discrete adjustable sizes (S 54-57 cm, M 57-60 cm, L 60-63 cm). Used for premium retail brands wanting tighter fit precision than one-size-fits-most can deliver. Triples the inventory SKU count vs. one-size.
